When Steele was fresh out of art school, his Helper art mentor David Dornan suggested he focus on just painting things he liked. As he began that process of developing his creative voice, he focused on two styles of artwork: a series of chrome objects that allowed him to study its overwhelming reflective light, and a coloring series with crayons recreating art history scenes.
Before long, he found that exploring crayon scenes continually expanded into a bigger world of pop-culture and iconic visual references; an exploration that created a bottomless avenue for his art curiosity. But his early chrome work was essential in informing and shaping his technical skills to accurately see the world he was painting.
