Steele began his career in a pair of downtown Helper storefronts, using one half as his studio space and the other half for a wood shop, canvas-building and framing space.

The new art studio was converted from a vacant bottling and beer distributing warehouse, a two-year process which included an ongoing interior renovation, as well as multiple exterior murals which highlight the rich mining and railroad history of Helper. The updated building will allow Steele to create larger scale work and grow into the facility’s increased floor space.

Fire damage had ravaged a major portion of the center building and required complete demolition. In the coming months, Ben will enjoy a studio space more than double in size from his current one, allowing his old studio space to transition into a gallery in Helper’s retail district.
