Much of Steele’s work forms around making commentary on Pop Culture and/or existing works of art, a long-standing artistic method called appropriation. In this layered piece, which comments on Steele’s own process of taking and commenting on other artists’ works, he juxtaposes the artwork Mistress and Maid by Johannes Vermeer (Steele’s favorite art master) with the commercial work of Andy Warhol with a stack of Brillo Boxes and Campbells Soup Cans; two styles and periods of artwork that are seemingly the antithesis of one another. Whether or not this appropriation is appropriate is ultimately up to you, the viewer.
